Help Your Child
Communicate! Help Your Child Identify Him/Herself
TRUE
STORY: In a small southern NH town, a child with autism
took his dog for a walk on a cool misty afternoon. He was dressed in a tee
shirt and shorts. During the course of his travels, he got turned around and
lost. After desperately searching the house and yard, his mother called the
town police. Immediately they went into action calling on surrounding towns to
help locate this young child with his dog. They were successfully found but by
the time this child was found, it had begun to snow and turned very cold. At
the location where the child was found, there was NO ONE who could
communicate yet even get this boy to take a blanket and/or get into the
cruiser. He obviously was cold, tired and scared. On the scene was a local
former NH state police officer and now attorney who knew all about autism ~~
she managed to be the only person the boy would respond to. Giving her direct
eye contact, no doubt hearing her reassuring voice, he immediately took the
blanket, got into the cruiser along with his dog and was very successfully
transitioned. As parents and grandparents of children with autism, we know the
true feelings of panic when our loved one is gone out of sight ... you can
write your child's name and address on the back side of this bracelet and this
will provide you with a true sense of security. Such a small price to pay for
peace of mind.
